Badgers are youngest members of the St John Ambulance Brigade were started in January, 1987, to celebrate the centenary of the Brigade. Since then St john Badgers has become the faster growing youth organization of its kind in England and Wales. The movement is also growing rapidly in Scotland; and there are now sets in countries across the world, including Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Bermuda, and Germany.

With effect from 1 January 1998, all St John Ambulance Brigade Primary School Unit have been automatically converted to St John Badgers.

The following information were extracted from London Headquarters for better understanding of the Badgers scheme i.e. type of activities and training syllabus, etc.:

(A) Activities

The Badgers meet once a week at their local Set, but keep in contact with other Sets through their County Badger Leader. They follow a course in 'Absolutely Everything', comprising 9 badges, each divided into 4 main topics. For each badge that is completed, a Badger is awarded a colourful pin-on badge and matching certificate.

The Set meetings are intended to be educational, but also great fun, often involving games, parties and sports. Sets frequently organise trips, camps, excursions and picnics and are also involved in fund raising activities and major St. John events, appeals and competitions.

(B) Aims

The purpose of the Badgers is:

(i) to provide a friendly, safe and relaxed environment, in which children can both learn and have fun, gaining a sense of achievement through everything they do.

(ii) to stimulate the interest of children in the concept and aims of St. John Ambulance at a very young age. This is achieved through their participation in a wide variety of Set activities, including basic First Aid.

(iii) to encourage the Badgers to develop their common sense, honesty, self-control, courage, and sense of fair-play.

(iv) to provide a junior section of St. John, establishing strong links with the Cadet movement and encouraging and preparing youngsters to progress into the Cadets.
